All 18 fighters who competed at this month’s World Series of Fighting 3 card tested clean for performance-enhancing drugs and recreational drugs/drugs of abuse.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today received the drug-testing results from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the June 14 event at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The main event saw former UFC fighters Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman meeting in a welterweight bout. It was Fitch’s debut with the promotion after being unexpectedly released by the UFC earlier this year.
Burkman clipped Fitch with a punch early in the fight in an exchange, knocking him off his feet. Burkman immediately pounced him him and locked in a standing guillotine choke. He dropped to his back and held the choke until Fitch went limp – when he released the hold, stopping the fight himself.
The fight has become controversial because of referee Steve Mazzagatti not seeing that Fitch was out and stopping the fight himself. Instead, it wasn’t until after Burkman released the choke and rolled Fitch off him did Mazzagatti see Fitch was out and wave the fight off.
The end came just 41 seconds into the bout and stretched Burkman’s win streak to five fights, including 3-0 in WSOF’s three events. He’s 8-1 since the UFC released him in 2008 after a three-fight skid. Fitch, a former UFC welterweight title challenger, on the other hand, has just one win in his past five fights.
Also on the card, Steve Carl stopped Tyson Steele in a welterweight co-main event with a first-round rear-naked choke; Jacob Volkmann made his WSOF debut after his UFC release and beat former Strikeforce lightweight Lyle Beerbohm by unanimous decision; and Justin Gaethje stopped Brian Cobb with a third-round TKO to open up the NBC Sports Network-televised main card. A five-fight preliminary card, including Dan Lauzon beating fellow UFC vet John Gunderson by unanimous decision, streamed at MMAjunkie.com.
