White: Movies aren't paying UFC champ Ronda Rousey the same as UFC fights

BOSTON – UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey appears to have a movie career in her future. But fighting is still a more lucrative venture for her, according to UFC President Dana White.

“I don’t care what Hollywood offers; they ain’t paying what we’re paying,” White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Rousey (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who next fights Miesha Tate (13-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 168 on Dec. 28, said in a recent interview that she could hang up her gloves in as little as two years, presumably to embark on a career in movies. Already her career in entertainment appears to be taking off, with roles in the upcoming “The Expendables 3? and a rumored part in “Fast & Furious 7.”

On Aug. 20, Rousey will fly to Bulgaria to begin filming for her role in “The Expendables 3,” which, according to a working draft of the script, is no bit part.

Despite her early success, Rousey’s timeline hasn’t been met with unanimous praise. In fact, it brought criticism from fans who said she might be turning her back on the sport that made her a star.

Recently, Rousey fired back at critics on Twitter.

“F— all you hating twitter bitches, have a great time spending the rest of your day seething over my options and choices,” she wrote.

On Thursday during a media scrum in support of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 26 event, her two-year window also brought skepticism from White, who said “there’s no way in hell” she would retire that soon.

The UFC executive saw Rousey’s outburst as a symptom of her relative inexperience as a media star.

“Here’s the thing: If you want to be on Twitter, get ready,” White said. “Put your big girl boots on, because s–t’s coming at you. Any time you’re in the public, whether it’s social media or the Internet or anywhere else, people are going to say stupid s–t to you. No matter what, it’s going to happen. And you can’t snap and flip out on everybody every time they do. She’s she’ll learn that. She’s still young.”

The learning that Rousey needs to do, according to White, is to know when to use social media and when to lay low.

“What Rousey has accomplished with the Olympics and mixed martial arts, I’m telling you, she’s a workhorse,” White said. “Just the load that we put on her, she kicks ass. She handles a lot of stuff. Everybody is going to have their moments where they snap and just say, ‘Hey, f–k you world. Leave me alone today.’

“But those are the days that you don’t pick up Twitter and push the button and you don’t get on the Internet. The only time you get smashed with that much negativity is when you go there. So just don’t go there.”
