As they say, expect the unexpected when it comes to the wild world of single-night MMA tournaments. Brian Foster is your latest proof.

Foster (25-8) was bounced early from Friday’s eight-man lightweight tournament, which was part of the NBCSN-televised WSOF 25 event at Comerica Theatre in Phoenix.

In fact, Joao Zeferino (20-7) eliminated Foster with a first-round heel hook in the opening round of the tourney, which featured a host of familiar names. However, when injured Mike Ricci (11-4) couldn’t continue after his win over Joe Condon (12-9), Foster got another life, and it eventually set up the tournament final – with a same-night rematch against Zeferino. Highlights of Foster’s remarkable performance are available above.

Here are the semifinal-round bouts that set up the final. Zeferino took on Jorge Patino (38-17-2), who also advanced despite an opening-round loss to Islam Mamedov (13-1), and Foster met recent title challenger Luis Palomino (24-12), who knocked out Richard Patishnock (6-3) in the tourney’s opening round:
