Danny Downes and Tiequan Zhang - WEC 53

Round 1:
The rounds starts with an awkward touch of gloves. Zhang takes Downes up against the fence and the fighters start to exchange punches. Zhang then slams Downes to the ground, taking his back. Zhang now trying for the choke, but cannot make it happen. The fighters scramble as Zhang keeps fishing for the Rear Naked Choke. Downes now rolls out of it, getting top position on Zhang. Downes now raining down punches. Downes lets Zhang up and the fighters reset. 1:30 left in the round and Downes lands a couple combinations. Downes now getting the takedown on Zhang. Zhang working for an armbar tries in the final seconds to set it, but cannot seal the deal. Downes gets and lands a few punches on Zhang to end the round.

Round 2:
Zhang takes Downes up against the fence early. Downes attempts a choke on Zhang, but the fighters both fall to the ground. Downes now stands dropping huge punches down on a lying Zhang. Downes goes to the ground taking Zhang’s back. Downes although slow to start in the first round is really picking up the pace in this round. Zhang, working great defense, is not letting Downes get anything done. Downes now standing again, dropping punches and kicks down on Zhang. Zhang looks to be drained of energy and is at the mercy of Downes. Zhang is taking all kinds of punishment at this point. Downes is pounding Zhang at will. Downes lands a huge elbow to start the flow of blood from Zhang’s left eye to end the round.

Round 3:
Zhang, gassed out at this point, falls immediately to the ground. Downes in a dominant position again, right where we left off in round 2. Downes trying to finish Zhang. Trying one thing after another. Downes continues to punish Zhang with body shots. Downes trying to get a submission, but Zhang has just enough energy to fend off his attempts. Zhang just trying to stay in the bout now with less than 30 seconds left. Downes struggling to try and not let the fight go to the judges but cannot make it happen as time runs out.
