Video: MMA could save the career of masked crimefighter 'Phoenix Jones'

It’s not every day ESPN’s popular “SC Featured” segments focus on MMA. Then again, amateur crimefighter Ben Fodor isn’t exactly a typical MMA fighter.

Fodor is also known as “Phoenix Jones,” a masked crimefighter who patrols the streets of Seattle – despite mixed reactions from local residents and local law-enforcement officials – as part of the Rain City Superhero Movement.

“I’m just like everyone else,” Fodor, 26, says in the slickly produced 11-minute segment, which debuted on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” this past weekend. “The only difference is that I decided to make a difference and start fighting crime in my neighborhood and my area.”

The mini-documentary covers the origin story of “Phoenix Jones,” reactions from police and media, run-ins with citizens, and the double-edge sword of his fame. However, the undefeated Fodor (5-0-1), who’s scheduled to fight welterweight Ben Egli (4-0) on March 21 at a KOTC event in Oregon, now hopes his promising MMA career, which was put on hold for the crimefighting adventures, can finance his superhero ambitions.

“I’ve been doing MMA in the streets with real consequences, so MMA in a cage is fun,” he says.
