Roy Nelson dropped Antonio Silva with a big uppercut and continued to throw blows until the fight was stopped. Unfortunately, Nelson felt the stoppage came far too late and was visibly upset at referee John McCarthy at the conclusion of the bout.
The heavyweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 95 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. It aired on FS1 following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
A crushing uppercut from Nelson (22-13 MMA, 9-9 UFC) put Silva (19-10-1 MMA, 3-7-1 UFC) on his back and may have been enough to stop the fight. However, McCarthy stood watching the action, resulting in Nelson having to drop more heavy right hands to Silva’s face. Nelson appeared to be near begging McCarthy to stop the fight before the fight was finally called off at the 4:10 mark of Round 2.
After being forced to continue to throw punches at the head of his downed friend, an irate Nelson threw a kick to the butt of McCarthy as he attended to Silva.
“This is what we do,” Nelson said following his winAn . “We fight, we get a KO and put on a show for the fans. As soon as I knew I hit ‘Bigfoot,’ he was already out. I got to punch him six more times, and I don´t think he needed this.”
