Undefeated Heavyweights Miocic, De Fries Clash at UFC on Fuel 1

UFC officials Wednesday announced that a heavyweight contest between unbeaten prospects Stipe Miocic and Philip De Fries will go down at UFC on Fuel 1.

Taking place Feb. 15 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., the event features an additional heavyweight confrontation between Stefan Struve and Dave Herman, as well as a 170-pound headliner pitting Diego Sanchez against Jake Ellenberger. Airing live on Fuel TV, the show marks the promotion’s first of six planned live events on the Fox-owned cable station in 2012.

Miocic (Pictured), 29, is a former NCAA Division I wrestler from Cleveland State University who also boxed his way to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. Turning to MMA in 2010, the Ohioan finished his first six opponents en route to capturing the North American Allied Fight Series heavyweight title. Miocic made his UFC debut on Oct. 8, outpointing durable veteran Joey Beltran at UFC 136.

De Fries last competed on Nov. 5, earning a unanimous decision over countryman Rob Broughton at UFC 138. Prior to his UFC debut, the 25-year-old had submitted each of his first seven opponents. In his two years as a professional, the Brit has finished six of his eight foes in the first round, submitting five by rear-naked choke.
