Cheick Kongo looked as though he was finished in his UFC on Versus 4 main event against Pat Barry, but the Frenchman landed a right uppercut that sealed the deal for the win.
Cheick Kongo
Kongo, although he had been hit with several power shots before the finish, landed a perfect right hand to get the knockout in the first round.
The fight between two known strikers had both trading leg kicks for the opening round. Both remained very patient, looking for the right moment to strike. Within the blink of an eye, Barry landed an overhand-right that dropped Kongo. He looked out, but the referee allowed the fight to continue. Kongo miraculously recovered, eating a second power shot from Barry before backing up against the cage looking dazed. Just then, Barry charged in and Kongo threw a right upper cut that knocked Barry out cold.
Just like that, Cheick Kongo was on the brink of destruction, but ended up knocking out his opponent in a sensational comeback. The stoppage came at 2:39 of the first round.
“After the huge time off (because of) injuries, I’m very happy,” Kongo said following the incredible knockout win. “It was perfect.”
Kongo’s win comes after he spent several months recovering from an injury. With the win, he’s victorious in two of his last three outings, while Barry is 1-2 in his last three.
