UFC on Fox 4 Results: Lauzon Submits Varner While Likely Earning ‘Fight of the Night’

Joe Lauzon and Jamie Varner at UFC on FOX 4The UFC gives out bonuses after every show for ‘Knockout of the Night’, ‘Submission of the Night’ and ‘Fight of the Night’.

Well, Joe Lauzon and Jamie Varner certainly did their part to lock up some bonus money courtesy of UFC President Dana White after a classic back and forth battle at UFC on Fox 4.

Jamie Varner returned for his second fight back in the UFC after a long hiatus in which he contemplated retirement at one point, but found his love of fighting again and decided to give it one more try. The dedication paid off when Varner knocked out previously undefeated prospect Edson Barboza on short notice at UFC 146.

So when Joe Lauzon’s opponent dropped out of UFC on Fox 4, Varner rolled the dice again with a short notice fight and stepped in once again to save the day and put on a show.

In the early parts of the fight, it looked like Varner had trained with Mickey Goldmill, the famous trainer from the ‘Rocky’ films, as he continuously looked to punish the body of Joe Lauzon with vicious kicks and punches.

Lauzon wasn’t backing off however and continued to step forward until a big right hand landed flush from Varner, dropping him to the mat with serious force. Varner looked to follow up and possibly get the finish, but Lauzon was able to pull guard and survive.

As the second round got underway, Varner looked like he was in need of oxygen and the short notice nature of the fight might have come back to bite him a bit. Recognizing his opponent’s peril, Lauzon was fast to the attack and after a flurry he got Varner down, looked for a choke before transitioning to the mount.

Varner squirmed and pulled and eventually slipped out of Lauzon’s grip and lived to fight for a third round.

The final stanza was no different than the first two as Lauzon and Varner came out toe-to-toe looking to close out the fight in impressive fashion. Varner decided to show off his wrestling a bit and slip under for a takedown, but the end result was his demise.

Varner was able to drop Lauzon to the ground, but quickly got reversed with a guillotine choke. A scramble ensued with Varner once again slipping away, but as he rolled to get back on top, Lauzon quickly wrapped a leg around his head with the other creeping up to latch on to the other.

Before you knew it, Lauzon had locked up a triangle choke and Varner was trying his hardest to slip out again. This time Lauzon was holding on like a snake constricting on its prey, and Varner was forced to tap.

Lauzon celebrated but not before hugging Varner and sharing a moment on the mat after a job well done by both competitors stealing the show in only the second fight of the night.
