Victorious headliner Mauricio Rua was suspended 45 days following his fourth-round knockout of Brandon Vera at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Vera, meanwhile, was suspended 60 days for a facial laceration, though he may be cleared early by a physician. Regardless, like Rua, “The Truth” must spend at least 45 days on the shelf due to the intense nature of his bout.
UFC on Fox 4 marked the Las Vegas-based promotion’s third effort on Fox’s flagship network in 2012 and saw karate stylist Lyoto Machida knock out “Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 winner Ryan Bader in the second round of their co-headlining attraction. Bader received a 45-day suspension for his efforts, while Machida was awarded a crack at the winner of Jon Jones’ Sept. 1 title defense against former two-division Pride Fighting Championships king Dan Henderson.
Also of note, main draw competitor Jamie Varner was suspended 180 days for a possible right hand fracture. The same fate befell returning welterweight Mike Swick and British powerhouse Oli Thompson, who were also handed six-month suspensions for various injuries. All three men may be cleared early by a physician. Meanwhile, DaMarques Johnson and Wagner Prado were suspended indefinitely and must receive physician approval before returning to competition.
