UFC on FOX 8 results/photos: Melvin Guillard knocks out Mac Danzig in second

SEATTLE – The way Melvin Guillard waited against the fence, coiled and ready to counter Mac Danzig’s attacks, you got the sense that someone would hit the mat sooner or later.

Turned out it was Danzig who was destined to hit the deck, as a second-round left hook by Guillard dropped him and a few follow-up hammerfists knocked him the rest of the way out, resulting in a knockout victory for Guillard at 2:47 of Round 2.

The lightweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX.

It seemed clear early on that Guillard had a speed advantage in the match-up. Danzig made a couple early attempts to get the action to the mat, but when that proved unsuccessful the former “Ultimate Fighter” winner had to settle for striking with Guillard, which proved as dangerous as ever.

The left by Guillard sent Danzing tumbling backward. Guillard wasted no time in pouncing on Danzig with hammerfists, knocking him unconscious and adding a couple more for good measure before the bout was finally stopped.

“I wasn’t really trying to do anything except fight my fight,” Guillard said. “He just ran into a stiff jab. Adjusting and putting that jab out there was key. Me and my coaches have been working on it and it worked out great tonight. This win means a lot to me. It means I can put those two losses behind me. I can get back to winning and get back to the top five. There’s no pressure – as long as I’m well-prepared and train hard, no one can beat me at 155. This is a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Guillard (31-12-2 MMA, 12-8 UFC) snaps a two-fight losing skid with the win, notching his first victory since a decision over Fabricio Camoes in July 2012. Danzig (21-11-1 MMA, 5-7) has now lost two in a row, with this defeat coming on the heels of his split-decision loss to Takanori Gomi in November.
