UFC on FOX 7 results/photos: Matt Brown shuts down Jordan Mein in slugfest

SAN JOSE, Calif. – There’s something about FOX that brings Matt Brown out to play – not that he wasn’t coming out to play prior to that.

Brown won for the third straight time on a FOX-televised event when he stopped the 23-year-old Jordan Mein one minute into the second round after five minutes of a slugfest to open the fight.

The welterweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC on FOX 7 event at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Mein came forward 20 seconds in with a step-in right elbow. But Brown had no qualms firing back and landed a good left hook. Brown chased Mein down and landed punches and a head kick. Then he gestured for the Canadian to come forward – and he did, landing a good shot of his own, then a solid left jab.

Brown kept coming forward with a relentless pace, and the two traded big bombs in tight before Brown clinched Mein up and looked to land elbows. Moments later, Mein had Brown backing up with a left hand, then several shots to the body that put Brown on the canvas. Mein got on top and went to work with the ground and pound with Brown going into survival mode from his guard. Brown expertly locked in a triangle choke that was deep and appeared to have Mein in trouble. But Mein escaped and with the fight back on the feet for the last 20 seconds of the round, Brown had Mein backing up eating punches.

The two traded punches early in the second, and Brown quickly got in and landed some giant knees that cut Mein open. Brown kept the pressure on and landed big punches on the ground, and with Mein’s knee on the canvas, he landed big elbows to the body as Mein covered up. From there, John McCarthy had seen enough just a minute into the frame.

“I think Jordan’s hype was well deserved,” Brown said. “He hurt me really bad with that body shot. I was really close to being incapacitated and unable to defend myself. I have no idea who I want next, but I think I deserve a fight that would put me in title contention. Every day I wake up and work as hard as I can. Some days you’re on and some days you’re off. I definitely woke up today.”

Brown (17-11 MMA, 7-5 UFC) won for the fifth straight time and for the third straight time with a knockout or TKO on a FOX card. Mein (27-9 MMA, 1-1 UFC) had his three-fight win streak snapped with the loss and was stopped with punches for the first time in nearly six years.
