SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Over and over again, UFC flyweight Hector Sandoval will tell you his next opponent isn’t getting past 10 minutes in the cage with him.
“He’s not a martial artist – he’s still a wrestler,” Sandoval (12-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) said of Fredy Serrano (3-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), whom he meets on the UFC Fight Pass-streamed prelims of Saturday’s UFC on FOX 22 event. “I’m going to pick him up. I think second round, he’s done. Second round, I’ll take him out.”
Sandoval, a member of Sacramento’s Team Alpha Male, is no stranger to finishes in his career; he’s earned five of his 12 pro wins inside the final bell. In the octagon, however, he is still searching for a stoppage and has been on the wrong side of one in his previous outing; Wilson Reis submitted him inside the first round at UFC 201.
Fighting on home turf Saturday at Golden 1 Center, Sandoval thinks he’ll have better luck this time around. But that’s no surprise given his low regard for Serrano.
“He does a bunch of dumb stuff,” Sandoval said. “He’s just in there to fight for some money, probably. I don’t really know, but I’m going to take him out in the second round, for sure. Second round, Sacramento, Calif. I’m going to win for sure.”
Setting very specific expectations is one way to go about talking up a fight. A fighter calling his shot can bring a lot of powerful momentum. It can also expose overconfidence and foolishness. Fans will see this weekend which one applies to Sandoval.
