BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Jack Marshman was willing to eat a few punches to deliver one, and in his long-awaited UFC debut, the strategy worked.
Marshman (21-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC), a former Cage Warriors champion, picked up his 19th stoppage in 21 career wins with an upset of heavy favorite Magnus Cedenblad (14-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC).
The middleweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 99 event at SSE Arena Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The entire event streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
Cedenblad tasted his opponent’s power in the opening minute of the fight when Marshman dropped him with a combo.
Cedenblad, though, quickly recovered, got to his feet, scored a takedown and then spent the remaining four-plus minutes of the round in top position delivering dozens of punches and elbows that badly bloodied his opponent.
Marshman hoped the start of the second round would give him another chance to throw leather, and he delivered a few quality shots despite a face full of blood. Cedenblad’s reach, both with punches and knees, appeared as though they’d be the difference-maker, but Marshman’s willingness to step into range to deliver power shots paid off and wobbled his opponent.
Cedenblad scored a takedown to buy some time late in the second round, but once Marshman was back up, he delivered a fight-ending barrage of punches to put an end to the bloody, hard-fought bout.
Marshman was formally declared the TKO winner at the 3:32 mark of the round.
By snapping Cedenblad’s four-fight winning streak, Marshman runs his own winning streak to seven – six of which have come via stoppage.
