It sure as hell wasn’t supposed to happen this way.
Brandon Moreno wasn’t supposed to take a fight with one of the most highly regarded flyweights in the world on a week’s notice, and he certainly wasn’t supposed to win – let alone get a finish against a more than 5-1 favorite.
But no one gave Moreno (12-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) that memo, and he forced Louis Smolka (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) to tap to a guillotine choke in the first round, leaving the Hawaiian stunned on his knees on the canvas.
The flyweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 96 event at Moda Center in Portland, Ore. It aired on FS1 following prelims on FS2 and UFC Fight Pass.
