Thiago “Marreta” Santos was a heavy favorite coming into his bout with Eric Spicely. However, Spicely showcased slick ground skills to score the shocking upset.
The middleweight bout was part of the main card of the UFC Fight Night 95 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. It aired on FS1 following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Santos (13-5 MMA, 5-4 UFC) entered the fight as an 8-1 favorite but found himself locked in an omoplata early in the first round. While he survived the submission attack, Santos soon found himself on his back defending against a kimura. Spicely continued to attack, taking the back and locking in the fight-ending rear-naked choke. The tap came at the 2:58 mark of Round 1.
