Former Legacy FC heavyweight champion Derrick Lewis continues to make his mark in the UFC. “The Black Beast” knocked out former title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC Fight Night 86 in Zagreb, Croatia on Sunday.
The two fighters had opposite game plans. Lewis came out and fired off a head kick that Gonzaga partially blocked and immediately looked to get the fight to the ground.
After successfully putting Lewis on his back. Gonzaga looked to advance to the mount position. Lewis rolled, giving the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt his back. Lewis worked his way back to his feet, but Gonzaga kept the pressure on.
The two worked for position along the cage until the referee separated them. Gonzaga quickly clinched and looked to get the fight back to the ground, but Lewis shook off the takedown attempt.

The referee separated the two men a second time and Lewis went on the offensive. He stepped in with a combination and a right hand rendered Gonzaga unconscious. It was Lewis’ sixth win, all by way of knockout.
“I feel real good,” he said following the fight. “I want to be top fifteen. I’m on the hunt for that title, so it was the perfect opportunity to fight Gabriel.”
The 31-year-old fought with a heavy heart and gave a shout out to his mentor who had passed away days before the event.
“I just want to give a shout out to one of my head coaches who passed away last week, Tony Orozco. If it wasn’t’ for him, I wouldn’t be here,” said Lewis.
The win could move Lewis into the rankings, and he wants a big named opponent in his next outing.
“Roy Nelson, I’m coming for you,” he said.
