UFC Fight Night 79 results: Dong Hyun Kim quickly stops Dominic Waters

SEOUL – Dong Hyun Kim needed less than one round to overwhelm Dominic Waters, thanks to a hip toss, a crucifix, and a few sustained moments of unanswered punching.

The result was a one-sided TKO win for Kim (21-3-1 MMA, 12-3 UFC), who tied up Waters (9-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) on the mat and peppered him with short shots until referee Leon Roberts called a halt to the bout at the 3:11 mark of Round 1.

The welterweight bout co-headlined today’s UFC Fight Night 79 event at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

This fight ended up in the clinch almost immediately, which proved to be to Kim’s advantage. As Waters worked for underhooks and threw one leg in front to attempt a throw, Kim countered with a throw of his own, flipping his opponent to the floor and then locking up the crucifix position from side control almost as soon as they landed.

Although he tried several times, Waters was unable to free himself from that disadvantageous spot. Kim kept him flat on his back, arms pinned on either side, with his face exposed to the left elbows and punches of Kim, who increased the pace of the blows as the crowd cheered him on.

The punches weren’t particularly heavy shots, but they did add up quickly. With Waters unable to move or defend himself, Roberts had no choice but to step in and stop it a little more than halfway through the opening round (via Twitter):

With the victory, Kim, ranked No. 10 in the NOS Energy Drink MMA welterweight rankings, has now won two straight. Waters has lost two in a row.
