UFC Fight Night 34 results: Dustin Kimura taps Jon Delos Reyes in action-packed first

dustin-kimura-ufc-fight-night-34SINGAPORE – Dustin Kimura didn’t leave the bout unscathed, but after surviving some early trouble, he tapped Jon Delos Reyes following a flurry of submission attempts.

The bantamweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 34 event at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. It streamed on the UFC’s new Fight Pass digital network.

Reyes, the second UFC fighter from Guam (and cornered by the first, Jon Tuck), jumped out to an early lead in the fight. In the opening minute, the fighter, who had posted first-round stoppages in six of his first seven career wins, knocked down Kimura down with a stiff right.

Kimura was clearly dazed, but he quickly went on the defensive as Reyes followed up with ground-and-pound. At first, it was simply to survive, but after regaining his composure, the submission attempts followed.

“It was ‘just don’t get hit,’” Kimura said of his initial game plan, which quickly went out the window. “He just kind of fazed me. He didn’t rock me. He just caught me, and my legs went out.”

But once on the mat, Kimura quickly regrouped. He moved from an omoplata attempt to a kimura, and ultimately, a fight-ending armbar that forced a tap-out at the 2:13 mark of the opening round.

“I went for the armbar, and he defended correctly and actually got out it,” Kimura said. “I had to readjust myself. … I actually heard his arm crack. I hope he’s OK.”

Kimura (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) successfully rebounded from his first career loss, which came to Mitch Gagnon in September, and picked up his eighth career submission win. Reyes (7-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), meanwhile, snapped a four-fight winning streak that earned him a UFC contract.
