ALBANY, N.Y. – He might have had a new nickname, but it was a vintage Corey Anderson in the cage against Sean O'Connell.
Anderson’s (9-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) fierce ground and pound gave O’Connell (17-9 MMA, 2-5 UFC) almost no chance to get in the fight. By the second round, the referee had no choice but to intervene.
The light heavyweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 102 event at Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
The fight was over at the 2:36 mark of the second round as O’Connell was saved from a flurry of punches from a mounted Anderson.
It took all of about 15 seconds for “The Ultimate Fighter 19” winner to put O’Connell on the mat and resume his work from the first round. O’Connell’s early efforts at a standup fight went up in smoke 40 seconds into the opening frame with a takedown. Anderson followed his opponent to the cage door and got busy with elbows from the top.
After a split-call loss to ex-champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his previous outing at UFC 198, Anderson debuted his new moniker, “Overtime,” and got back in the win column with a vengeance.
O’Connell, meanwhile, drops to 2-5 in his octagon career after a “Fight of the Night” loss to Steve Bosse.
