Former women’s bantamweight champ Miesha Tate found herself in trouble more than once against Raquel Pennington, but no moment was as frightening as when Pennington lifted her well off the ground with a guillotine choke attempt.
The women’s bantamweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden in New York. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Pennington (8-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) locked in the choke near the mid-point of Round 1, wrenching the choke so hard Tate (18-6 MMA, 5-3 UFC) left her feet multiple times. The first time seemed involuntary, a product of Pennington’s sheer strength. The second, Tate pushed off the cage and inverted herself to move toward an escape.
She was able to escape and the women continue to battle.
