UFC 202 Results: Conor McGregor Gets His Revenge, Tops Nate Diaz in Rematch

Conor McGregor got a taste of revenge, beating Nate Diaz in the main event at UFC 202 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

McGregor edged Diaz in a majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena, gaining judges’ scores of 48-47, 47-47 and 48-47.

McGregor started off much more reserved at the beginning of the rematch, utilizing leg kicks throughout the round. He eventually landed a strong left hand that floored his opponent, but Diaz returned to the feet. Towards the end of the opening frame, McGregor stung him with a hand combination.

McGregor continued to apply the leg kicks in the second round. He twice dropped Diaz with left hands, and halfway through the round landed a quick combination that stunned the Stockton fighter. Diaz, however, turned it up towards the end of the round and began to land some offense against a slowing McGregor.

Diaz was able to pressure his opponent for much of the third, clinching McGregor against the cage and trading blows from that position. McGregor turned his back a number of times and Diaz taunted him as if to call the featherweight champion out for running from the fight. The final minute included Diaz battering McGregor with punches against the cage.

McGregor’s offense improved in the fourth round, as the fighter found a second wind in landing more quality strikes. The two engaged in a number of clinches, and McGregor seemed to get the best of the exchanges.

The final round saw both fighters gasping for air. Diaz’s face was bloodied from the numerous combinations thrown by his opponent, and he worked relentlessly to clinch and get the takedown. He finally got McGregor to the ground with 10 seconds left in the fight, but it was too late to advance to a place to secure a submission.

With the win, McGregor avenges his loss to Diaz from their first fight in March. UFC President Dana White has said that McGregor will return to the featherweight division to defend his belt, although McGregor has said he and Diaz are destined to fight a third time. When that will happen, however, is up in the air at this point.
