The UFC’s new 135-pound king pocketed “Performance of the Night” and “Fight of the Night” honors for his fifth-round stoppage of ex-champ Renan Barao in the evening’s main event. Barao, meanwhile, earned an extra $50,000 in defeat.
UFC 173 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and saw Dillashaw dominate the evening’s bantamweight title headliner, flooring Barao early and then consistently beating him to the punch before lifting the gold from the Brazilian with a crisp, fifth-round flurry.
Earlier, Canadian talent Mitch Clarke earned the evening’s second performance bonus with a slick submission of Al Iaquinta, catching the American in a tight brabo choke and relieving him of his consciousness early in the second round of their preliminary lightweight duel.
