UFC 171 results: Justin Scoggins stays unbeaten, dominates Will Campuzano

DALLAS – Justin Scoggins danced his way down the aisle to the cage, and he had the same energy once the fight started.

Scoggins dominated Will Campuzano, both in the standup game with his karate, and when the fight hit the canvas, en route to a unanimous decision.

The flyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC 171 event at American Airlines Center in Dallas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FOX Sports 2 and a main card on pay-per-view.

Scoggins switched stances early, then shot in 30 seconds into the fight and quickly took Campuzano’s back against the cage. Campuzano tried to turn out of it, but found himself working from his back as Scoggins tried to establish position from half-guard. Campuzano worked back to his feet, but still had to contend with an energetic Scoggins in the standup game, where the American Top Team-trained fighter dominated him with kicks in a strong first round.

It was more of the same in the second, as Scoggins put together creative kicks in his karate game that left Campuzano guessing. But 90 seconds in he shot for a takedown and found himself caught in a guillotine choke. But Campuzano broke it to adjust it, and Scoggins was out of danger and on top in half-guard. WIth two minutes left, Scoggins briefly had Campuzano’s back. It didn’t last, but he continued to dominate on the canvas, as well as in the standup game.

Campuzano knew he needed to go for broke in the third, and he increased his intensity early. But Scoggins took him down easily and mounted him. He had to give up the position, but he did his best ground-and-pound work seconds later before working to take Campuzano’s back. And there, he continued to work his opponent over with strikes from side control. Throughout the latter half of the frame, Scoggins worked Campuzano over with punches and knees, and when Campuzano got back to his feet, Scoggins simply brought him back down with his seventh takedown of the fight.

The UFC’s third youngest fighter got a trio of 30-27 scores from the judges in one that seemed to be on cruise control throughout.

“I train with the best team in the world, and the best coaches in the world and best people around me,” Scoggins said. “This is mixed martial arts, and we want to be well-rounded and not come in with a specific game plan. I train to be the best all-around in every aspect.”

Scoggins (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) remained unbeaten after a win in his UFC debut in December. Campuzano (13-6 MMA, 0-4 UFC) still is without a UFC win after dropping a fight to Sergio Pettis in his return to the promotion in November.
