UFC 166 live and official weigh-in results

cain-velasquez-junior-dos-santos.jpgHOUSTON – MMAjunkie.com was on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 166 fighter weigh-ins, where all but one fighter made weight on their first attempts.

The festivities took place at Toyota Center in Houston, the same site that hosts Saturday’s event.

In the main event, heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (12-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) has his third fight against Junior dos Santos (16-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC). Each fighter has a win in the trilogy, both in title fights. In November 2011, dos Santos picked up a knockout win in what was Velasquez’s first title defense. But after one win each, Velasquez exacted his revenge with a five-round dominant decision win at UFC 155 this past December.

Dos Santos, from Brazil, weighed in first and was 240 pounds. Velasquez was 241.

It’s going to be great for all the fans. I’m here to give you guys one more knockout,” Dos Santos said.

“He’s a tough dude, and this fight I expect to be tougher than the second one,” Velasquez said. “That’s what I trained for, that’s what I’m ready for. I trained for a five-round fight, and I’m ready for whatever.”

The co-main event has become a grudge match of late, with Daniel Cormier (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) fighting for what he says will be the final time at heavyweight before dropping to 205 pounds. He meets Roy Nelson (19-8 MMA, 6-4 UFC), and the two have not been fond of each other in the weeks leading up to the fight. Nelson weighed in at 249 pounds and will have a distinct size advantage over Cormier, who was 224. Cormier was 235 for his fight in April against Frank Mir.

Former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (21-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) meets “TUF 1? winner Diego Sanchez (24-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) on the main card. Melendez is fighting for the first time since a split-decision tittle fight loss to Benson Henderson in April. Melendez and Sanchez each came in at 156, and then stood several feet apart – Melendez pounding his chest and Sanchez pointing at himself.

Also on the main card, heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga (15-7 MMA, 10-6 UFC) and Shawn Jordan (15-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) meet. Gonzaga was 257; Jordan tipped the scale at 255. And to open the pay-per-view, flyweights John Dodson (14-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Darrell Montague (13-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) both were on their marks at 125 and 126, respectively.

Only UFC newcomer Andre Fili, who took his fight against Jeremy Larsen on less than two weeks’ notice, missed weight on his first try. He was 148.5 pounds for the featherweight fight and was given two hours to cut to the max of 146. But he elected to not re-weigh, and will forfeit 20 percent of his fight purse to Larsen.
