UFC 165 results and photos: Francis Carmont dominates Constantinos Philippou

TORONTO – With a Georges St-Pierre special, Francis Camont brought to a grinding halt the surge of Constantinos Philippou.

Over three rounds, the welterweight champion’s training partner grounded and smothered his opponent en route to a unanimous decision win.

The middleweight bout was part of today’s UFC 165 event at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.

All three judges gave every round to Carmont, with one awarding the French fighter a 10-8 round for a 30-26 score. It was the kind of dominant performance that left no doubt of the winner, though its effect on Carmont’s appeal may be just as clear.

Despite his roots in Montreal, where he trains at the famed Tristar Gym, the crowd at Air Canada Centre booed him like an out-of-towner. Undoubtedly, they disapproved of the fight’s pace, which played out slowly as he landed takedowns and then methodically worked at maintaining position.

Occasionally, Carmont reared up to deliver big shots from top position, grunting as he did so. While Philippou couldn’t elude his takedowns, he was able to dodge any severe damage on his back.

Philippou had chances to sway momentum in the second round, when referee John McCarthy stood up the fight, and in the third, when the two swung lazy strikes at each other. Carmont, however, simply took the fight back to the mat and kept it there.

Carmount, looking thoroughly defeated, eventually gave up mount position in the fight’s waning moments.

Carmont (22-7 MMA, 6-0 UFC) earned his sixth straight win in the UFC while Philippou (12-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) sees a five-fight winning streak ended.
