The 26 fighters participating on Saturday’s UFC 165 fight card weighed in Friday at Air Canada Centre’s Maple Leaf Square in Toronto.
The event is headlined by UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who puts his belt on the line against Alexander Gustafsson in what would be a record-setting performance should he win. The co-main event features UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao putting up his belt against former WEC champion Eddie Wineland.
Both main event fighters tipped the scale at 204.5 pounds, making it an official fight for Jones’ UFC light heavyweight championship.
There has been a lot of chatter about Jones’ six-foot-four height vs. Gustafsson’s six-foot-five height, but neither man seems to put much stock in the height or reach advantage.
“This sport is about intelligence and the way you approach this game,” said Jones after stepping off the scale. “I’m so excited to prove that height doesn’t really mean that much. This is going to be our third championship here in Canada and I’m just so grateful to be here.”
Gustafsson followed much the same thinking, saying, “It’s no factor at all. It’s all gonna come down to who is working the hardest. I want that belt now.”
Wineland weighed 135.25 pounds for his interim title challenge of Barao, who weighed 135 pounds. Typically, in a title fight, there is no allowance to go beyond the limit, but no explanation was given at the weigh-in, and the fight will go on as scheduled.
Ivan Menjivar weighed in one pound over the 136-pound limit for his bantamweight fight with Wilson Reis. He was given time to lose one pound to make their Fox Sports 1 preliminary bout official.
