UFC 162 results/photos: Gabriel Gonzaga needs just 17 seconds to TKO Dave Herman

LAS VEGAS – Dave Herman landed three strikes – four if you count touching gloves with Gabriel Gonzaga. But Gonzaga had four of his own, and they were all he needed.

Herman wanted to establish distance early with kicks – but then ate a right hand that led to a Gonzaga TKO win just 17 seconds into the fight.

The heavyweight bout was part of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FX ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.

Herman kicked to the body early, trying to create that distance he might need against the heavy-handed Brazilian. A second push-kick to the body came right after the first. But it was his third kick that led to his quick dismantling.

Herman threw an outside leg kick, and Gonzaga countered perfectly when he fired off a right hand to the chin that put Herman immediately on the canvas. Gonzaga pounced and landed three right hands on the ground before Kim Winslow could get in to stop the fight.

The knockout was the fourth fastest in the history of the UFC’s heavyweight division, and it moved Gonzaga into second place all time in the weight class with 10 stoppage wins in the promotion.

Gonzaga (15-7 MMA, 10-6 UFC) got back in the win column after a 71-second TKO loss to Travis Browne in April. He now has won four of his past five. Herman (21-6 MMA, 1-4 UFC) lost for the fourth straight time – and quite likely will be looking for a fight outside of the UFC his next time out.

“I trained a lot (on striking), but I was really prepared for the ground game, too,” Gonzaga said. “You really need to be prepared for the whole game now.”
