UFC 160 play-by-play and live results

LAS VEGAS – MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 160 event.

The event, which features heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

ESTEVAN PAYAN VS. JEREMY STEPHENS

Round 1 – Referee Chris Tognoni in the cage for the night’s first fight. Payan opens with a low kick and a flurry in the pocket. Stephens pressing forward, but Payan throwing first to open. Stephens scores with a low kick to the cup, and Tognoni calls for time. On the restart, Stephens goes right back to the legs. He drives in on a takedown, but Payan pushes him away. Body shots traded. Payan lands an overhand right that wobbles an off-balance Stephens. He recovers and shoots in, pushing Payan to the floor. Two minutes into the frame. Payan with full guard underneath. Payan keeping things tight, and Tognoni calls for action. Payan is cut on the forehead, but he turns for an arm. He nearly nets it, but Stephens pulls free. They scramble up, and Stephens pushes Payan against the fence. Payan tries to secure the neck but gets taken down. They don’t stay there long, scrambling up and launching knees. Stiff right lands for Stephens. Counter right scores, as well. Stephens looks comfortable on the feet, and the blood is bothering Payan. Stephens lands again before the bell and takes the round on the MMAjunkie.com card, 10-9.

Round 2 – Early right hand staggers Payan. He recovers, but Stephens presses forward and sets the tone. After a few exchanges, he drives in for a takedown. Payan works quickly back to his feet, but as he looks for the neck, he falls to the floor. Blood flowing more freely now as Stephens continues to punch and elbow from the top. Payan tries again to shift his hips for offense underneath, but Stephens pushes through. Upkick does score for Payan, but Stephens moves past the legs. Payan turns and exposes his back. Stephens accepts the invitation. Hooks in, he looks for a choke against a kneeling Payan. He doesn’t give up, defending well as the blood pools in front of him. Stephens continues to dominate the position and look for the choke, but Payan lasts until the bell. He’s a bloody mess, but he’ll see the third. Close to 10-8 work, but MMAjunkie.com gives it to Stephens 10-9.

Round 3 – Stephens moves forward again, firing low kicks in addition to his hands. He snaps Payan’s head back with a jab. Payan’s cuts immediately open, and the blood flows. Stephens with a high kick. Right hand scores. Payan still firing shots, and he lands a jab. His corner yells that he needs a finish. Stephens drives in and takes the fight to the floor, moving immediately to the back. Payan again defends well, refusing to take the easy way out. Stephens in complete control. Payan does get to his feet, his face is stained red. It’s all over Stephens, too. He shoots in again in the final minute, taking the fight again to the floor. Half-guard for Payan. Stephens stays on top, where he finishes the fight. MMAjunkie.com gives Stephens the round, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27. Jeremy Stephens def. BRIAN BOWLES VS. GEORGE ROOP

Round 1 – Referee Herb Dean in charge of this bantamweight contest. Roop jabs and throws a high kick early. He wants to use his range. Bowles tries to move inside and eats a knee. He backs away. Bodyshot for Bowles. Both fighters taking turns trading punches. Uppercut scores for Roop. Bowles comes back winging power hooks. Roop popping his jab. Two minutes into the fight. Roop kicks the body. He’s holding the center well. Flurry lands, punctuated by a high kick. Bowles looks comfortable, and he is throwing heavy punches. Roop kicks the leg. Roop throws two punches and a high kick, and Bowles bounces off the fence. Stiff jab for Roop. Two bodyshots for Bowles. He lands again, and Roop is wobbled from a right to the ear. Bowles follows to the floor and sinks in a guillotine choke. He takes full guard before flipping over to the top. Roop guts it out, but MMAjunkie.com likes the late work from Bowles, 10-9.

Round 2 – Roop looks OK to open, and he starts with a kick. Roop working his kicks more frequently to start, and it’s keeping Bowles away. Jab for Roop, whose corner yells that Bowles is tired. Stiff jab sends Bowles to the floor. Roop follows with brutal right hands. Bowles is hurt badly, and he just turtles. Dean calls for the recovery, but Bowles is done. Fight over. George Roop def. Brian Bowles via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 1:43.

NAH-SHON BURRELL VS. STEPHEN THOMPSON

Round 1 – Referee Steve Mazzagatti oversees the evening’s final Facebook-streamed contest. Thompson side kick to the body. Burrell wastes little time pushing forward and moving into the clinch. Thompson circles off and drives in from the outside. Thompson drops to a knee but can’t get the trip. Burrell works in a few knees before they finally break. Thompson strikes quickly on the restart. Burrell pushing forward, and Thompson shoots in on a takedown. Burrell scrambles up, and they work again in the clinch. Thompson pulls free, and they fire punches in the pocket before Burrell moves inside again. Thompson getting the best of those exchanges, but Burrell scoring with knees on the inside. Stiff left scores for Thompson agains the fence. Burrell is hurt. Thompson scores a takedown. Burrell scrambles back up in the final minute. Round ends as they break from the clinch. MMAjunkie.com gives it to Thompson, 10-9.

Round 2 – Thompson again looking to trade hands in the early going. He’s finding success to open, and Burrell again closes the distance in hopes of working inside. Thompson with his hands low and winging punches. He tries to move laterally to keep space, but Burrell gets inside again. Thompson works free and kicks to the body and head. He’s punching well, and Burrell continues to press for a clinch. Thompson pulling free without absorbing much damage. Thompson slips a hook and looks for a takedown, but Burrell remains upright. Thompson lands shot left as they break. His strikes are adding up. High kicks come. Thompson looks to be trying to set up something special. Final minute. Burrell walking forward. Thompson chops the leg and just misses a spinning kick. Burrell misses badly on a flying knee and hits the fence. They reset and move into a clinch until the bell. MMAjunkie.com sees it for Thompson, 10-9.

Round 3 – Burrell is behind, and he opens aggressively n the third. Still, Thompson easily brushes him aside. It’s more clinchwork briefly, and the crowd boos the position. Thompson pulls free and starts to work kicks to various levels. Burrell covering up well and avoiding the big shot.Still, he’s struggling to counter. He does finally land a left that catches Thompson’s attention. Thompson looks a little hurt but answers by getting busy with punches and kicks. Thompson’s hands remain by his side. Burrell does land another left, but Thompson appears to have recovered. He scores a takedown, but Burrell pops immediately back to his feet. They break apart with 90 seconds left. Burrell lands another punch flush, but Thompson walks through it. Burrell misses another flying knee. Thompson works to his back. He pulls away, and they flurry in the final seconds. Burrell lands several knees inside. The third was Burrell’s best, but MMAjunkie.com gives the final to Thompson, 10-9, giving him the fight 30-27. Stephen Thompson def. Nah-Shon Burrell via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).

KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV VS. ABEL TRUJILLO

Round 1 – Referee Mario Yamasaki in the cage as the prelims move to FX. Trujillo takes the center, bouncing lightly on his feet. He leaps forward with a left hand. Nurmagomedov staying at range early. Trujillo rushes forward with punches but can’t land flush. He does it again but uses it to move into a takedown. Nurmagomedov traps the arm from underneath and rolls out looking for an omo plata or armbar. Neither score, and Trujillo pulls free. Nurmagomedov stays with him and moves quickly to his back. Trujillo tries to move to his feet, but Nurmagomedov keeps the body tight and continues to drag him to the floor. Trujillo pops up each time, and he tries to turn in for defense. But Nurmagomedov just deposits him over and over on the floor. Trujillo hits a slick roll to counter, and he winds up on top. Nurmagomedov answers by bringing his legs up for a triangle choke. Less than a minute. Nurmagomedov rolls over to top position. He breaks the triangle and transitions to an armbar. He can’t get it before the bell. MMAjunkie.com sees it for Nurmagomedov, 10-9.

Round 2 – Trujillo again takes the center. They engage, and it’s Nurmagomedov that scores with a right hand before again transitioning to the back. This time, Trujillo pops quickly back up and looks to strike. Nurmagomedov is fine with that, scoring flush again and transitioning quickly to the back. Trujillo drops to his knees before standing again. Nurmagomedov sends him for another ride and then gets the hooks in on the back. Nurmagomedov looking for the rear-naked choke. Trujillo defends it well and gets back to his feet. Nurmagomedov keeps dragging him down. Trujillo slips to the top briefly in one transition, but Nurmagomedov deftly maneuvers back to the dominant spot in rapid fashion. One minute left. Nurmagomedov just maintains the bodylock, giving Trujillo no room to breathe. Nurmagomedov scores a few punches from the rear position, but he’s been suffocating for 10 minutes. MMAjunkie.com gives Nurmagomedov the second, 10-9.

Round 3 – Trujillo leaps forward with a left. Nurmagomedov slips it, hits him with a right of his own and then moves immediately into the bodylock. He drags the action to the floor before Trujillo stands again. Familiar feel to this fight. Trujillo can’t shake Nurmagomedov, who just drops him over and over and over again. A frustrated Trujillo turns to Yamasaki. He can’t get any room to breathe. Nurmagomedov pushes him to the floor and takes top position. Trujillo crawls up the feet and Nurmagomedov elevates him and slams him to the floor. Trujillo is absolutely smothered and has no recourse. One last takedown to close the show. Dominating win for Nurmagomedov, who takes the third on the MMAjunkie.com card, 10-9, getting the fight 30-27. Khabib Nurmagomedov def. Abel Trujillo via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

COLTON SMITH VS. ROBERT WHITTAKER

Round 1 – Referee Chris Tognoni in the cage for this welterweight matchup. Whittaker with his left arm down, and he uses it to throw a jab. Smith pushes in and narrowly avoids an uppercut. He shoots again, but Whittaker easily brushes him off. Whittaker holding the center, keeping that left hand low. Smith the attacker, and Whittaker setting up to counter. Smith circling on the outside. High kick from Smith brings several punches from Whittaker. Two minutes remain. Weird feel to this fight. Whittaker scores with an uppercut. Smith drives in for a takedown that won’t come. Whittaker sticking to his gameplan, holding the center and looking to counter. Smith scores with a crisp Superman punch. He keeps driving forward and scores with a right that sends Whittaker to the floor. Whittaker crawls back up after a wild scramble. Round ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie.com gives the first to Smith, 10-9.

Round 2 – Smith’s right eye busted up a bit. They flurry to open, and Whittaker scores with a left hand. Smith pops up and keeps moving forward, and Whittaker does it again. Torrid to start, and Smith smiles as they settle a bit. Smith kicks the leg. Overhand right comes over that left hand, which is still by the waist. Smith shoots on a leg, but Whittaker turns and scrambles free. Smith misses a haymaker. He charges forward again, and Whittaker gets caught in the groin. Brief timeout before we resume. Smith speeding up with his hands, and he kicks the body. Whittaker continues his approach. A left hand scores, and Smtih is wobbled. Whittaker keeps rushing forward and throwing, and Smith’s right cheek busts open. Fun sequence before the bell, and MMAjunkie.com gives it to Whittaker, 10-9.

Round 3 – Whittaker scores with an early jab, and he follows it with a straight. Smith rushes forward with punches, but Whittaker catches him with a counter left. Smith hits the deck on the stuff shot, and Whittaker pounces with a flurry. Pinpoint strikes, and Tognoni steps in. Robert Whittaker def. Colton Smith via TKO (punches) – Round 3, 0:41.

DENNIS BERMUDEZ VS. MAX HOLLOWAY

Round 1 – Referee Herb Dean in the cage for this featherweight fight. Bermudez leaps forward with a left. Holloway keeping distance. Front kick for Holloway, and Bermudez rushes forward. He can’t quite gain control and pulls away when his opponent grabs his neck. Jab for Holloway. Bermudez trying to press, but Holloway using his reach to open. Bermudez lands a combination, and he kicks the legs. Holloway moving away and looking to stick and move. Bermudez gets in on a single leg but can’t get the takedown. Holloway pulls free from the clinch. Bermudez pushes forward, and Holloway tags him with a spinning kick to the face. Bermudez is hurt. Holloway tries to push for more. Bermudez grabs hold to slow things down. They break, and he seems to have recovered. Holloway lands a straight right and another spinning kick, this time to the body. Two more come in the closing seconds. Bell sounds, and Holloway takes it 10-9 on the MMAjunkie.com card.

Round 2 – Bermudez drives in for a takedown, but Holloway alertly bounces off the fence and transitions to the back. He can’t get the hold, so he lets it go and lands a high kick as he breaks. Bermudez comes back with a Superman punch. Holloway keeps popping the jab.Left high kick sneaks over the shoulder. Bermudez continues to walk forward. He’s showing durability, but he’s struggling to get past the reach. Halfway mark. Bermudez pushing, and he drives in for a takedown. Holloway defends well against the cage before easily breaking free. Bermudez misses a Superman and eats a counter. Holloway continues to look for spinning strikes. Holloway misses a capoeira kick, and Bermudez whiffs on a flying knee. They smile after the sequence. Holloway taken down at the end but looks for an armbar. Round ends, and MMAjunkie.com gives it again to Holloway, 10-9.

Round 3 – Hug to start the final round. Bermudez still lively, and he comes out on fire. His offense scores a takedown in the opening minute. Holloway works to his knees and then to his feet. Bermudez tries to grab the neck but can’t. Bermudez walking forward, but he’s running into a buzzsaw in Holloway, who looks as good as he ever has. Holloway’s jab continues to land. Bermudez gets in on another takedown, but Holloway gets immediately back to his feet and pulls away. Bermudez working the body and trying to change levels. He needs a finish. He’s pressing like he knows it. Holloway slowing a bit. Bermudez gets another takedown. Bermudez punching away from top position. Holloway’s nose busted up. Final minute, and he’s holding tight to prevent Bermudez from posturing. Bermudez does work in several short punches and elbows. Still, he can’t get the finish. Fight ends with Bermudez on top. MIKE PYLE VS. RICK STORY

Round 1 – Referee Steve Mazzagatti oversees the evening’s final prelim. Story rushes forward, and Pyle circles on the outside. Quick strikes exchanged, and Story in on an early takedown. Pyle shifting his hips underneath, looking for options. He turns on an arm, but Story pulls it free. Pyle looks for a sweep and transitions beautifully into an armbar attempt, but Story alertly spins over it and reestablishes top position. Story grinds away from the top. He’s not finding much room to strike, but he’s keeping the dominant spot. Pyle works to his feet and covers up as Story tries to unload. Story counters a low kick and unleashes two more punches. He’s firing heavy punches. Story lands a right to the body and a left to the chin that sees Pyle crash to the floor. Mazzagatti lets him recover after he looked out be stiff. Pyle somehow does withstand the barrage. Round ends there, and MMAjunkie.com gives it to Story, 10-8.

Round 2 – Pyle looks relatively clear to start. Story again pushes forward. Pyle catches him with an early knee, but Story moves right back in. Takedown for Story, and Pyle latches on to the right arm. He straightens it out and starts looking for the kimura. It looks threatening, but Story patiently waits through it. Pyle holds guard underneath. Story riding out the position right now. He’s on top but not doing much. Pyle firing short punches underneath. He briefly controls the wrist and looks for a triangle. Story evades it and sits down again from top position. Round ends there. MMAjunkie.com sees it for Pyle, who was active underneath, 10-9. Will see if judges see the same.

Round 3 – Pyle kicks the leg. Story looks to throw big punches. He moves in on a takedown. Pyle catches him with a knee and backs away. Pyle with a front kick. Story has slowed. Pyle grabs a Thai clinch but can’t land. He’s walking forward. Story drives into the clinch. Much of his power seems gone. Pyle working well inside and bloodies up Story’s nose. Pyle lands a few nice elbows to the temple. Story keeps pressing and scores a takedown. Pyle immediately back up, but Story is holding the body. Pyle touching the floor, and Story knees the thigh. Mazzagatti letting them work, even as the crowd boos. Pyle turns in and lands a few knees to the head. Story looks exhausted as the final minute starts. Pyle tees off on the feet.Story muscles into a takedown, but Pyle turns for an armbar. He doesn’t get it, but he sweeps to top and the back, where he finishes the round. DONALD CERRONE VS. KJ NOONS

Round 1 – Referee Mario Yamasaki in the cage for the night’s first main-card matchup. Cerrone rushes forward, and they trade low kicks immediately. Cerrone shoots in for a takedown and lands a big knee when Noons defends the shot. Jab for Cerrone. No slow start tonight. Noons hanging in the pocket, but Cerrone working his jab. High kick jus touches the face for Cerrone. Cerrone kicks the body. Noons’ right eye busted up, but he’s returning fire. Noons working his jab, and Cerrone goes to the legs. Takedown for Cerrone. noons gets immediately back up, and Cerrone catches him with one punch as he rises. Cerrone digging at the legs. Noons trying to move forward, but everything he throws is being answered. Two punches score for Noons. He kicks the elgs and follows to the head. He’s hitting his rhythm, but Cerrone scores with another high kick in the final minute. Cerrone really letting his kicks fly. Round ends, and MMAjunkie.com sees it for Cerrone, 10-9.

Round 2 – Cerrone with an early takedown and appears to be looking for the choke. Noons scrambles free and gets to his feet. Cerrone looks again for a takedown, but Noons blocks it. Cerrone still letting his hands fly, and he lands flush. Noons not backing down, and he continues to throw back. Cerrone getting the best of it, but Noons is moving forward. Cerrone nearly sweeps Noons off his feet with a low kick. Cerrone kicks to the body. Noons backing away to reset. He does land with a left hand, but Cerrone comes back with a flurry of shots. Spinning backfist wobbles Cerrone. He drives through a knee and scores a takedown. Big left hand scores from the top. Cerrone establishes a dominant position and digs to the ribs. Noons turns and looks to escape, but Cerrone continues the beating with short elbows and punches. Noons’ nose bloodied. Cerrone finishes on top, and MMAjunkie.com gives him the round, 10-9.

Round 3 – Crowd applauds as Cerrone asks for noise, and the two embrace to open the third. Noons bloodied immediately, but he’s trying to throw. He’s reaching with his jab, but a few hooks scores inside. Cerrone retreating and countering, and Noons wants him to stand still. Instead, Cerrone drops in for a takedown. Noons gets full guard underneath. He bucks and rolls and nearly escapes, but Cerrone gets top agin. Yamasaki looking closely at Noons’ face, which is bleeding worse and worse. Noons firing elbows from his back., but Cerrone unleashing elbows from the top. Noos turns to his side, looking for options. Cerrone holds him down and scores more punches from the top. Cerrone advances to side control. Blood everywhere yet again. Punches and elbows from the top to finish. MMAjunkie.com gives the final round to Cerrone, 10-9, giving him the fight 30-27. Donald Cerrone def. K.J. Noons via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

T.J. GRANT VS. GRAY MAYNARD

Round 1 – Referee Chris Tognoni in the cage for this bout, which should determine the next contender to the UFC lightweight title. Both fighters feeling the range early. Maynard fires off a few sweeping hooks. Right hand lands, and Grant asks for more. Lead uppercut for Maynard. He’s finding the target early, but Grant absorbing it so far. Right hand sees Maynard stagger a bit. Grant right staggers Maynard. He’s in survival mode. Grant is all over him Punches and knees come in furious succession. Maynard is trying to retreat and recover, but Grant will not allow it. Maynard staggers, and Tognoni watches closely. Grant keeps up the assault, and that’s the fight. Impressive. T.J. Grant def. Gray Maynard via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 2:07.

JAMES TE HUNA VS. GLOVER TEIXEIRA

Round 1 – Referee Herb Dean in the cage. Quick exchange to open. Teixeira looks for a takedown. Te Huna defends, and Teixeira tags him with a right. Torrid start. Te Huna in the pocket going toe to toe. Teixeira ducks down and gets a leg, driving the action to the floor. Half-mount for Teixeira. Te Huna keeping him tight for now. Teixeira working his leg free to get to side control. He does, but Te Huna stands during the transition. Teixeira snags the neck and drops to the floor. Guillotine in tight, and Te Huna’s left arm is trapped, too. He has no choice but to tap. Glover Teixeira def. James Te Huna via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 1, 2:38.

JUNIOR DOS SANTOS VS. MARK HUNT

Round 1 – Referee Steve Mazzagatti oversees the night’s co-main event. Building feels like a headliner. Hunt takes the center and dos Santos circles outside. Early low kick from Hunt. Right hand scores for dos Santos, but Hunt rolls with it. Hunt again kicks at the leg. Hunt throwing heavy to open. Left hand lands, and dos Santos moves away. Huge overhand scores for dos Santos, and hunt drops but somehow gets back up. Hunt still banging. Patient work for dos Santos. He doesn’t want to get clipped. He’s moving in and eats a left hand. The nose of dos Santos is reddened. Hunt is landing with some success. Final minute. Punches traded. Hunt moves in with a spinning strikes, and dos Santos counters and narrowly avoids taking it flush. Another huge right for dos Santos, followed by a left. Hunt doesn’t budge. Round ends, and MMAjunkie.com gives dos Santos the first, 10-9.

Round 2 – Hunt moves in to open and lands a big right. He kicks the leg, as well. Bodyshot for dos Santos, followed by a strike to the head. Hunt still holding the center, stalking. Hunt jabbing while dos Santos throwing big power shots. Hunt scores with a right. Hunt throws but eats a right hand. THe timing is on for dos Santos, but he’s still wary of Hunt’s power. Jabs working for dos Santos. Spinning kick to body for dos Santos. Hunt gets inside for a right hand. Jabs again for dos Santos. Hunt lands a big left hand. Agains the fence, dos Santos looks to be hurt. He pulls free. On the restart, he scores a takedown, and the crowd lets out a massive boo. Short elbows for dos Santos from the top. Side control for dos Santos, and he scores a few more elbows. They get up as the round ends, and MMAjunkie.com gives it again for dos Santos, 10-9.

Round 3 – Huge applause to start the third. Hunt again stalks from the center. He misses a huge right hand, while dos Santos scores one of his own shortly after. Hunt scores with a short left, but dos Santos scampers away. hun can’t keep up with dos Santos in terms of speed, but his power is still there. Hunt misses a kick to the legs. It’s dos Santos circling, looking to move in and out. He lands a crisp jab. Short elbow scored for dos Santos. Hunt still pressing, looking for the one big shot. Kick to the leg for dos Santos. He fakes a takedown and punches up top. Hunt swing and misses. Uppercut scores for dos Santos. Hunt looks a little frustrated. Left hand wobbles Hunt. He’s tagged again by dos Santos. Hunt somehow stays on his feet. Crowd chants “Cigano!” Hunt’s face bloodied. Spinning high kick lands or dos Santos, and Hunt slowly wobbles to the floor. It’s followed by massive dos Santos punches, and this fight is over. Incredible finish. Junior dos Santos def. Mark Hunt via knockout (strikes) – Round 3, 4:18.

CHAMP CAIN VELASQUEZ VS. ANTONIO SILVA

Round 1 – Referee Mario Yamasaki in the cage for the night’s main event, which sees Velasquez look to defend the UFC heavyweight title. Silva walks to the center. Velasquez shoots immediately on a leg but misses. Silva very patient to start. Velasquez kicks the leg and avoids a counter. Velasquez right topples Silva. He goes to his knees, and Velasquez continues to pound away wit right hands. Silva in trouble, and Velasquez keeps punching. Fight waved off. Silva upset at the call, but it’s done. Cain Velasquez def. Antonio Silva via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 1:21 to defend UFC heavyweight title.
