UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (18-1 MMA, 12-1 UFC) once again put his name in the UFC’s record books, and he survived a gruesome injury to do it.

Jones earned a first-round TKO over Chael Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6 UFC) in the headlining bout aired of Saturday’s UFC 159 pay-per-view event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Jones assaulted Sonnen from the opening bell, repeatedly taking him to the floor and smashing him with his trademark ground-and-pound assault. Jones dominated the fight from start to finish, but afterward he discovered that he dodged a very dangerous bullet: the champ snapped his big toe, exposing the bone through the wound. The injury wasn’t discovered until the fight was halted, and Jones retained his title, tying Tito Ortiz for the most consecutive defenses of the UFC’s light-heavyweight title at five.
