Nearly everyone predicted that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, despite taking a step up to the light heavyweight division, would easily defeat Stephan Bonnar at UFC 153 on Saturday night in Brazil. But the manner in which he did so left even the most staunch Silva supporters in awe.
Silva toyed with Bonnar, rope-a-doping him a la Muhammad Ali, hands at his sides and back to the fence, before channeling his inner Mike Tyson and dropping him face down to the mat with one devastating strike.
That was all it took. Silva did have to land a few more punches before the referee stepped in, but make no mistake about it, that one well-timed knee is what put Bonnar out.
“Not injured, just caught with a perfect knee to the solar plex and it paralyzed me, was just getting movement back when fight was stopped,” Bonnar tweeted the day after the fight.
“(Silva is) the greatest of all time,” exclaimed UFC president Dana White, proclaiming him superior to even Mike Tyson’s heyday in boxing. “I think he’s the greatest in any combat sport. Anderson Silva just does amazing things that nobody else can do.”
