After winning seven consecutive fights, Junior dos Santos had a title shot waiting for him. Then Cain Velasquez, suffering an injury in his fight with Brock Lesnar, was sidelined, his time frame for a return unknown.
The Brazilian didn’t want to wait, so he accepted a coaching slot opposite Brock Lesnar for Season 13 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The two were then slated to fight in the main event of UFC 131 in Vancouver, the winner getting the shot at Velasquez upon the champion’s return.
Then Lesnar had to bow out due to another bout with his diverticulitis.
This time Shane Carwin stepped up, agreeing to fight dos Santos on just a couple weeks of notice.
dos Santos is just glad that Carwin stepped up. At 26 years of age, dos Santos didn’t want to sit on the sidelines, waiting for this fight or that fight.
“We are fighters and you have to be fighting to be in shape,” he said at Thursday’s UFC 131 pre-fight press conference at Robson Square in Vancouver. “So I am glad to be fighting again.”
