Chael Sonnen seized his own opportunity for a middleweight title bid with a shutout unanimous decision over Nate Marquardt. Sonnen, a U.S. Olympic wrestling team alternate, made $124,000, including the promotion’s “Fight of the Night” bonus he shared with Marquardt, who took home $105,000.
Matt Serra was another big breadwinner with a $210,000 haul for his first-round technical knockout against Frank Trigg. Trigg, facing his second striking-induced defeat in the Octagon in as many fights, made $30,000.
