Although fight week discussion included title shots and quick turnarounds, Nick Newell will not be doing any of that, because the WSOF lightweight is officially retired from MMA competition.
Newell (13-1) pulled a surprise move on Saturday when he announced the end of his career following a unanimous decision victory over Tom Marcellino (7-4) at WSOF 24.
At just 29, Newell believed he’d done enough to justify an exit from the sport and move on to the next chapter of his career. A fighter going out on his own terms is rare in combat sports, and Newell believed it was the right time after a triumphant performance.
