A welterweight bout is in the works for UFC 138 in England with former title contender Thiago Alves facing undefeated Swedish fighter Papy Abedi.
Sources close to the match-up confirmed the fight to MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday.
Following a title run in 2009, American Top Team fighter Thiago Alves has faced some ups and downs lately in the cage. Following a tough loss to Jon Fitch at UFC 117, Alves employed nutrition guru Mike Dolce to help him with his dietary and weight cutting needs and immediately bounced back with a dominant win over Jonn Howard.
Alves looked to do the same in his next fight, but came up just short in his bout at UFC 130 against Rick Story, in a three round war between the two welterweights.
Now ‘Pitbull’ will look to get back on track in the UFC’s welterweight division against a tough up and coming prospect from Sweden.
Just signing with the UFC a few weeks back, Papy ‘Makambo’ Abedi will make his Octagon debut with no easy task in front of him.
Abedi currently sits at 8-0 with 7 stoppages to his credit and has competed at middleweight for most of his career, but once signed with the UFC the 32-year old Judoka opted to drop to welterweight instead.
The bout between Alves and Abedi is added to the growing UFC 138 fight card that was just announced on Tuesday featuring the main event between Mark Munoz and Chris Leben.
