There’s a Rumor Going Round that Donald Cerrone Wants to Fight in Denver

Fight. Denver. Yes. Denver. Punch. Denver. Training. Denver.

That’s pretty much the gist of what Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone had to say following his fight with Jeremy Stephens at UFC on Fuel TV 3 on Tuesday night in Virginia.

Okay, maybe the gist was really that he wants to fight again soon, and he’d like that to be on his home turf in Denver at UFC 150 in August. He did actually have a little bit to say about other things, like how he felt losing to Nate Diaz at UFC 141 to close out 2011 on a down note.

“Definitely coming off of that last fight sucked,” Cerrone declared. “Mainly going out there and having fun was what tonight was about. It was just trying to do what I do and have fun like I do in the gym.”

What he does in the gym is pick people apart. Normally, in a fight, Cerrone starts off slow and then when he gets clocked, he goes into overdrive, not often sticking to his strategy.

But on Tuesday night, he took a different approach, utilizing his reach advantage to full effect, methodically attacking Stephens from every angle and with nearly every tool in the box.

Still, he feels there’s room for improvement.

“(I’m) slowly making the steps. I wish I would have attacked on the ground a little bit better.”

The goal, as with most fighters, is a run-up to a title shot, but Cerrone doesn’t exactly have a road map laid out with a definitive path to championship gold.

Who is the next step? Anthony Pettis?

“That’d be a good match-up. Stylistically it would work out perfectly for me,” said Cerrone about fighting the former WEC lightweight champion. “He’ll stand and want to fight, try to take me down, and then I’ll beat him up. We’ll keep fighting. It’d be a good fight, especially for Denver.”

That’s the one element of the plan that he’s not wavering on, his next destination… Denver.
