Two heavyweight teammates are expected to clash in May at UFC Fight Night 87.
Former champion Andrei Arlovski (25-11 MMA, 14-5 UFC) and Jackson-Wink MMA teammate Alistair Overeem (40-14 MMA, 5-3 UFC) are expected to clash at the event.
Arlovski posted the matchup on Instagram with the message “coming soon.” Bleacher Report‘s Jeremy Botter first reported the matchup on Saturday.
UFC Fight Night 87 takes place May 8 at Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The card is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
Arlovski is No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, and Overeem is No. 7.
Arlovski, who had a UFC title reign from 2005-2006, resurrected his career and earned an invitation back to the UFC in 2014 after a solid run with organizations such as WSOF and ONE Championship. Upon his return, the 37-year-old Belarusian won his first four fights and posted victories over the likes of Frank Mir and Travis Browne. However, in his most recent bout, he suffered a 54-second TKO loss to Stipe Miocic.
He now meets Overeem, a former Strikeforce and K-1 champion who recently re-signed with the UFC after completing his previous deal. With a current three-fight winning streak that includes a recent TKO win over ex-champ Junior Dos Santos, the 35-year-old Dutchman had considered other promotions, but he remains with the UFC and now has an opportunity to defeat a top contender and likely earn an elusive title shot.
