TUF ‘The Smashes’ Episode 6 Recap: Team UK Levels Scores at 3-3

TUF The Smashes Episode 6 opened with an Australian victory giving them the ability to choose the final two lightweight fights.

During a sparring session, Team Australia’s Patrick Iodice was frustrated after his teammates were pressuring him and he was beginning to gas. It was obvious nerves were kicking in for the youngest ever TUF competitor, but coach George Sotiropoulos spoke with Iodice and helped to get his mind back in the game.

At the fight announcement, George Sotiropoulos chose Brendan Loughnane (UK) vs. Patrick Iodice (AUS).

After being caught by a big leg kick in his win, Manny Rodriguez of Australia visited the doctors where he learned that he had fractured his leg and would be out for eight weeks.

“It’s very disappointing,” Sotiropoulos said. “But the thing with the Australian team is that we’re very supportive.”

The next day at training, Rodriguez spoke to UFC president Dana White through video chat. “Unfortunately you’re going to have to leave the competition,” White said. “I respect that and you will get your time somewhere down the line.”

Rodriguez broke the news to both teams, and was forced to say his goodbyes before exiting the house.

In true “The Freak Show” fashion, Fletcher pretended to be the new Australian teammate “Russell Bandingo” donning the Aussie hoodie and long blonde hair, bringing laughs to the house.

The new real team member, James Vainikolo, entered the house to an enthusiastic response from his new teammates.

At the weigh-in, Brendan Loughnane and Patrick Iodice both hit the scales at 155.5 pounds.

Patrick Ioidice (AUS) vs. Brendan Loughnane (UK)

Round 1- Loughnane lunges in with a punch, but Iodice was quick to score a double-leg takedown. Iodice worked for his position and was able to land scoring shots with Loughnane on his back. Loughnane looked to get back to his feet, but ate a knee from Iodice. After clinching against the cage, Iodice took Loughnane back to the mat. Following more grappling, Loughnane took control landing ground shots with Iodice covering up on the mat. 10-9 Iodice.

Round 2- Loughnane opened with a leg kick, before shooting in and slamming Iodice onto his back. Iodice brought it back to standing, grappling against the cage. Loughnane was able to get the takedown reigning down with hammerfists and connecting with ground strikes to the bell. 10-8 Loughnane.

A confident Loughnane said post fight, “I’m the guy who came in short notice and took the first win by storm. Now, I’m going all the way.”
