TJ Dillashaw Doesn't Think Conor McGregor Deserves UFC Title Shot; 'Edgar Would Destroy Him' | MMAWeekly.com

TJ Dillashaw Doesn’t Think Conor McGregor Deserves UFC Title Shot; ‘Edgar Would Destroy Him’

There is no denying that flamboyant Irishman Conor McGregor has made a major impact on the mixed martial arts world since his arrival in the Octagon.

McGregor is currently riding a 12-fight winning streak, including all four of his UFC bouts. In the Octagon, he has defeated Marcus Brimage, Max Holloway, Diego Brandao, and Dustin Poirier. In those four bouts, he’s earned one Knockout of the Night and two Performance of the Night bonuses.

Quite possibly, he’s been even more successful outside of the cage, utilizing his gift for gab to not only talk at length at media events surrounding is own fights, but also at question and answers sessions and the like, inciting both reporters and fans alike. McGregor has even filled in for UFC president Dana White, who recently put a damper on his usual post-fight scrums with reporters.

If he beats Dennis Siver in the UFC Fight Night 59 main event in Boston on Jan. 18, it’s likely that McGregor will get the next shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

While McGregor has been on a tear in the Octagon and out of it, current bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw still doesn’t feel like the Irishman has done enough with his fists, and has made too much headway towards a title shot with his mouth.

“I don’t agree with Conor McGregor getting a title shot, especially after beating Dennis Siver, if he does. Why is that deserving of a title shot? Dennis Siver is not on the way up; he’s not up there looking for a title shot himself,” Dillashaw said during a recent edition of Submission Radio.

Dillashaw believes there are fighters that should still be considered ahead of McGregor in the line to a title shot. He believes that fighters like Frankie Edgar, Chad Mendes, and Ricardo Lamas are fighters not only already pushing for the belt, but fighters that would give McGregor fits in the Octagon.

“Why not put Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar? Why not put Conor McGregor against Chad Mendes, or Lamas, or one of those top guys, who’s actually pushing for the belt? Just because he has the hype behind him, and he’s been talking a big game, and he’s going to sell tickets, I just don’t think it’s right to surpass the Frankie Edgars, the guys that could beat Conor McGregor,” said the champ.

“I think Frankie Edgar would destroy Conor McGregor. Chad Mendes would destroy Conor McGregor. We haven’t seen Conor McGregor fight a wrestler or a top name.”

Despite calling McGregor’s win over Poirier “a fluke,” Dillashaw does respect his fighting skills. He just doesn’t feel like McGregor has yet earned a shot at the belt.

“He’s really good, he’s confident, he has great stand-up, and he’s tricky, but I just don’t feel like he’s deserving yet. I don’t think he should surpass those guys to get the shot; and if he does, the thing is, if he does fight Aldo, he does have a chance because it’s going to be a stand-up battle. And then Aldo doesn’t have that threatening takedown skills, and going to try and tap you, or ground and pound you.

“I don’t think he should get the title fight because he doesn’t deserve it, but it’s going to be a close fight in my mind.”
