Strikeforce Overeem vs. Werdum Play-by-Play: Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum

Round 1: Werdum doesn’t back away from Overeem, comes out with a knee to the face. Werdum then shoots, but Overeem sprawls it out, then catches a Werdum kick and tosses him to the mat. Werdum is butt scooting, trying to get Overeem to come down, but the Strikeforce champ will have none of it. Werdum keeps shooting, but Overeem keeps shutting him down. Overeem drives a knee to the midsection.Werdum moves in firing punches, then pulls Overeem to the mat, but Overeem stands right back up… and again. Werdum lands a few punches and moves in with a knee strike, but can’t find a home for it. They clinch up and Overeem just tosses him off again. Overeem lands a hard left hook, follows with a knee to the body, and then tosses Werdum down again. Werdum begs Overeem to come down to the mat, but he won’t go. Werdum goes for the takedown and eats a knee from Overeem. Werdum pulls Overeem to the mat late in the round, but Overeem just stays on top of him and drops a couple shots before the horn. Round 2: Werdum opens with a straight right and knee to the body, but Overeem fires back with a harder knee to the body and again tosses Werdum down. Overeem kicks, but Werdum catches it and puts Overeem down. Overeem gets up and Werdum lands several punches and knees before pulling guard. Overeem immediately pulls out of the guard and stands up. Overeem lands the left hook and then works the body, follows with a right uppercut. Werdum is landing, but looks to have no power, appears to be fading fast. Overeem unleashes a mixed combination of knees and punches, rocking Werdum. Werdum pulls Overeem to the mat again, this time Overeem stays down in WErdum’s guard, possibly to rest for a bit, and then stands up. Werdum is very slow getting up. They clinch and Overeem drives a knee to the face of Werdum, who hits the mat again. He gets up and Overeem lands another knee and follows Werdum to the mat, laying in his guard, landing a couple pot shots to Werdum’s head. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Overeem.

Round 3: Werdum comes out aggressively, feeding Overeem a steady diet of punches and knees. Overeem answers back, and they hit the mat again, but again, it’s quickly back to the feet. Werdum takes another punch from Overeem then pulls guard, but he’s only hugging the body of Overeem, not searching very aggressively for submissions. This time, standing, Overeem takes a swing at Werdum as he tries to get up.  Finally back on their feet, Werdum connects with a couple shots, but as soon as they clinch, Werdum again falls to his back, pulling guard on Overeem, but Overeem is doing nothing from the top while Werdum is doing little from the bottom. Overeem backs out and makes Werdum stand again and then drives knees to the midsection. Werdum fires back with punches, hits the mat, and then tries to find a last-second kneebar, but can’t secure it before the bell.
