Source: Alexander Gustafsson Injured, UFC on Fuel TV 9 Main Event in Jeopardy

Following reports Sunday morning by Swedish media outlets SVT.se and MMANYTT.se, Sherdog.com’s Ryan O’Leary (MMAViking.com) confirmed that Alexander Gustafsson has suffered a facial laceration that has put in doubt the light heavyweight contender’s showdown against Gegard Mousasi Saturday at UFC on Fuel TV 9.

The fight is slated for the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Speaking with O’Leary, Swedish MMA Federation President George Sallfeldt discussed Gustafsson’s cut and the prospects of fighting next weekend in the Fuel TV-televised main event.

Sallfeldt stated that the laceration was a “freak accident” that occurred during the 26-year-old’s final scheduled sparring session, and that there was a “99 percent chance [that Gustafsson] will not be cleared in time” by Swedish MMA Federation (the commission that overseas combat sports in the country) doctors to compete on April 6.

“It’s not Alexander Gusatfsson’s choice, it is the doctors call,” Sallfeldt told O’Leary. “Gustafsson wants to fight.”

The Swedish finisher stands at 15-1 as a professional mixed martial artist, and holds a 7-1 record inside the Octagon.

As of publication time, the UFC has yet to comment on Gustafsson’s injury. Stay tuned to Sherdog.com for real-time updates regarding the situation.
