Leonardo Luiz Batista was reportedly arrested Monday in Rio de Janeiro in connection with Priscila Belfort’s 2004 disappearance. Batista was captured after being placed on a most-wanted list in February, according to the report.
Four individuals had previously been arrested for their involvement in the crime, including Elaine Paiva, who confessed to police in 2007. Belfort’s body has never been recovered.
The January 2004 kidnapping occurred just weeks before Belfort challenged Randy Couture for UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 46. In spite of the tragedy, “The Phenom” won his first world title in 49 seconds after he was awarded a technical knockout due to a cut.
