Recent UFC title challenger Glover Teixeira avoids surgery on injured shoulder

Although he injured his right shoulder in a recent failed bid for the UFC light heavyweight title, Glover Teixeira recently got some good news.

The fighter, who suffered a decision loss to titleholder Jon Jones this past month at UFC 172, said the injured joint won’t require surgery.

Teixeira (22-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) injured his shoulder when Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) cranked it early in the first round of their April 26 pay-per-view headliner. The Brazilian fought on despite a torn labrum, but he suffered a five-round loss via 50-45 scores across the board (watch the Jones vs. Teixeira video highlights).

Prior to the defeat, Teixeira had won 20 straight fights, including five straight in the UFC.

He’s currently ranked No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light heavyweight rankings.

A timetable hasn’t been set for his return to the cage.
