RNC Choke Kills WWE Wrestlemania Fan Who 'Refused to Give Up or Tap Out': Fan Reaction (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By Cheryl Ragsdale,

Very sad news following quickly on the heels of Brock Lesnar creating a stir by turning up at a WWE event. Two family members—wrestling fans—took things too far playing around with a chokehold that apparently, neither of the two people involved took seriously enough.

Rear Naked Choke (RNC) held too long

"Stephen A. Arceneaux III, a 24-year-old from Destrehan, was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m. Sunday night, The Times-Picayune reported." source

"According to St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, Arceneaux had gathered with friends at a home on Murray Hill Drive to watch the pay-per-view event "Wrestlemania 28" on television when he and a 14-year-old cousin began to wrestle on an inflated mattress on the floor. The juvenile, who is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 110 pounds, placed his arm around the neck of Arceneaux, who was 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighed 220 pounds, in a move commonly known as a "rear naked choke hold" for 30 to 40 seconds." source

30 or 40 seconds?

Apparently, the kid knew how to apply the RNC choke, but didn't understand the rules of engagement regarding when you let go of a choke. If the person has already passed out, it is unlikely that he would be tapping. What would possess him to hold on for so long? I'm surprised that he didn't feel his cousin go limp.

He will have the rest of his life to regret that mistake.

Brazilian jiu jitsu was originally designed for a smaller man to defend himself against a larger opponent. I wonder if the 14 year old learned this move from watching Youtube videos. I can't imagine that he trains at a BJJ academy and would think that it was okay to hold on to a choke for that long.

How long does it take to turn blue?

How could he not know that the man was out cold?

To apply the choke, you put your face close enough to notice whether the other person is breathing or not. Plus, his body would go limp. This is a very scary situation to me because a supposedly responsible adult was involved. Chalk it up to a tragic accident.

Seriously, people—don't try these moves at home.
