LAS VEGAS – As the UFC celebrates its 20th anniversary this week, it’s only fitting the UFC’s current top draw arrived at today’s UFC 167 open workouts with the organization’s first true star: UFC 1 tournament winner Royce Gracie.
UFC welterweight champion and UFC 167 headliner Georges St-Pierre arrived with his special guest at today’s fan and media event, which took place at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
After entering via a traditional “Gracie Train,” both fighters posed in their traditional gis before hitting the mats for some light grappling. At one point, Gracie, a three-time UFC tournament winner and member of the UFC Hall of Fame’s inaugural class, blindfolded the champ to see what St-Pierre could do.
“It was an incredible honor,” St-Pierre said after the exhibition. “It made my whole trip.”
The sequence was a big hit with the hundreds of fans who attended today’s event, which precedes Saturday’s big pay-per-view show at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
