He wanted a gorilla on his chest, a crown because he’s king, and the gorilla to eat a heart because, well, it just felt right.
UFC interim title challenger Conor McGregor stopped by TBS’ Conan on Thursday to pump up next week’s UFC 189, charming the talk-show host on topics such as pre-fight sex, tattoos, and, of course, boxing.
McGregor (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC), who on July 11 faces short-notice stand in Chad Mendes (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena, took the obligatory shot at Floyd Mayweather before an audience revved up by his dapper suit and quick comebacks.
McGregor offered to take on the square circle’s king in boxing, where the payday would be good regardless of result, or in MMA, which would give up more upper hands than he could hold.
“If you’re asking would I like to fight Floyd, I mean, who would not like to dance around the ring for $180 million?” he asked. “I certainly know he would not like to step into my world, the world of pure unarmed combat where there is no limitations, but I most certainly would step into his world and I would box him if the opportunity arose.”
The style vs. style matchup, a trope in MMA since forever, is a good idea according to McGregor because it’s just about all there is left to create intrigue. In case you hadn’t heard, the reviews for Mayweather’s win over Manny Pacquiao weren’t all that good.
In MMA fight, McGregor again stated the obvious.
“Boxing isn’t the style that can beat Floyd,” he said. “But there are many, many styles that can beat him. If we were to get it on, I would most certainly dismantle him.”
