You know Conor McGregor was waiting, cell phone in hand, to pipe up when Joseph Duffywas scratched from Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 76 due to a concussion.
McGregor, the interim UFC featherweight champ, didn’t disappoint. Shortly after the news broke of the scrapped main event, he offered to save it by rematching Dustin Poirier (18-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC), his former opponent and Duffy’s (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) scheduled matchup.
“I will give peanut another crack at the King no sweat,” he wrote. “I’ll take the gate. It’s my gate anyway. A cool 7. Cash. See you at the weigh ins.”
McGregor even threw a jab Duffy’s way, referring to the flash knockout the Irish fighter reportedly suffered that led to his withdrawal.
“Must be that Canadian air,” McGregor wrote. “It’s fresh as fuck over here. Rock chins bred on this side.”
McGregor reportedly wanted a showdown with Urijah Faber, his opposing coach on “The Ultimate Fighter 22,” at Saturday’s fight card at Dublin’s 3Arena. Instead, he was booked for a highly anticipated showdown with featherweight champ Jose Aldo at UFC 194. Meanwhile, the UFC installed Duffy, the last man to beat “Notorious,” as UFC Fight Night 76’s headliner opposite Poirier, who moved to the lightweight division after a knockout loss this past September to McGregor.
Even without McGregor’s presence, UFC Fight Night 76 was a quick sellout.
Now, the event is headlined by a flyweight fight between Louis Smolka (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Paddy Holohan (12-1-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC), which was twice promoted after the event’s co-headliner, a heavyweight matchup between Ben Rothwell and Stipe Miocic, was scratched due to an injury to Miocic.
According to MMAjunkie’s Mike Bohn, the UFC reportedly recruited lightweight Norman Parke (20-4-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC), who is scheduled to fight Reza Maddadi (13-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at Saturday’s event, to fill in for the injured Duffy. But Poirier reportedly turned down the fight, scrapping the main event. He apologized Wednesday to fans for the turn of events.
