NSAC meets Tuesday, Wanderlei Silva and Nick Diaz on agenda

The Nevada State Athletic Commission will meet next week, and one of their most controversial decisions in recent memory could be altered.

Nick Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) was suspended for five years and fined $165,000 after the UFC star tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his UFC 183 bout with Anderson Silva. The length of the suspension caused an uproar from fighters, media and fans.

Fans drafted a White House petition to lift the suspension that resulted in more than 115,000 signatures and got an official response.

“The federal government plays no role in the disciplinary actions taken by state athletic commissions, so we are not in a position to address the specific request raised in your petition,” the official response read. “State authorities – in this case, the Nevada Athletic Commission – will generally be the best source for information about those kinds of issues.”

Diaz and the NSAC have supposedly been in talks to alter the terms of the suspension, however.

“Just spoke with my legal team at Campbell & Williams and talks with the NV athletic commission are going well,” Diaz wrote on Instagram. “We’re working hard with them to get this right. Thanks for the support.”

“Hearing on motion for reconsideration and proposed settlement agreement against mixed martial artist Nick Diaz, for possible action,” is currently the second item on the NSAC meeting agenda.

Also at the meeting, barring any last minute changes, is a re-hearing for Wanderlei Silva.

Silva was handed a lifetime ban by the NSAC after running from a drug test ahead of UFC 175.

A Nevada judge overturned the ban and ordered the NSAC to revisit the situation surrounding the May 2014 drug test. After the re-hearing was postponed multiple times it is now set to take place Tuesday.
