After losing his co-main event opponent, Akira Corassani has a new foe for Stockholm.
Corassani (12-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will meet Max Holloway (10-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 53 co-feature in October in Sweden. UFC officials announced the new fight on Thursday, with Holloway stepping in for the recently injured “Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung.
UFC Fight Night 53 takes place Oct. 4 at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm. The event streams on UFC Fight Pass.
Holloway recently told MMAjunkie Radio he was hoping for a ranked opponent next after his thrilling win over Clay Collard this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 49 in Tulsa. Holloway is not currently ranked in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA featherweight rankings, and neither is Corassani. But Holloway does have three straight wins, including three straight stoppages, since suffering back-to-back losses to the highly regarded Dennis Bermudez and Conor McGregor.
Corassani also recently was on a three-fight UFC winning streak. However, in his most recent performance, the 31-year-old “TUF 14? semifinalist suffered a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier at the TUF Nations Finale in April. Despite the defeat, Corassani earned “Fight of the Night” honors and picked up his first UFC fight-night bonus.
Jung, who is ranked No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA featherweight rankings, was on a three-fight winning streak before a TKO loss to Jose Aldo. Prior to the title defeat, in which Jung suffered a shoulder injury, the 27-year-old “Korean Zombie” had defeated Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier – all via stoppage and all in bonus-winning performances. Now he’ll continue on the sidelines before he can return.
