The recently announced championship bout between Marloes Coenen (21-5) and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (11-1) will headline Invicta FC 6.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently passed along news of the matchup, which awards the winner Invicta’s first-ever featherweight title, on Saturday, and Invicta officials recently confirmed it’ll headline the event.
Invicta FC 6 is targeted for a late-June or early-July date. A host city and venue, as well as broadcast/streaming plans, haven’t been finalized.
The two fighters first met in January 2010, when Santos defended her Strikeforce featherweight title with a third-round TKO victory over Coenen (21-5), whom she slowly wore down throughout the fight.
At Invicta FC 5 this past weekend, Santos successfully returned from a 16-month drug suspension and layoff, and she dominated late replacement Fiona Muxlow for a first-round knockout. It marked Santos’ ninth knockout in 11 career wins.
After her loss to Santos, Coenen went on to win Strikeforce’s bantamweight title in her next bout by submitting Sarah Kaufman. That victory is part of the Dutch vet’s current 4-1 run, which also included an Invicta FC 1 decision win over Romy Ruyssen and a December submission victory over Muxlow at DREAM.18.
